Re-potty. Barry's handy cacti and succulent repotting guide

It’s Spring! And now all your prickly pals have woken up some of them may need a change of scenery to encourage active growth so here is our quick guide to repotting your cacti and succulents!  (We recommend you repot every 2-4 years).

  • First things first, gather your supplies. You’ll need a pot with drainage holes that is 1-2cm bigger than its current pot, some fresh cactus repotting soil (different to regular repotting soil as it retains less moisture which prevents root rot), some gloves and/or some tongs!

  • Now it's time to get down to business. Gently remove your plant from its current pot using gloves or tongs, being careful not to damage the spines or disturb the roots too much. If the roots are tightly packed, you can give them a little massage with a fork to loosen things up!

  • Next we get dirty! Pop some fresh cactus potting soil in your new pot, making sure to leave enough room for your plant to sit comfortably positioned at the same depth as it was in its previous pot. Then, place your plant in the pot and fill in any gaps with soil, press down gently to remove air pockets. You can also add a layer of small clean gravel to the top of your pot instead of soil to aid water drainage around your plant.

  • Finally, put it in a sunny spot to bask in its new surroundings, and avoid watering for a couple of weeks until your plant gets used to its new soil.

Hey presto! You have successfully repotted your cactus! Now sit back, relax, and admire your handiwork.

We’ve got loads of plant care goodies over on Barry The Cactus - Keep your plants happy!

Happy repotting!
