Winter Dormancy: Why Your Cactus Collection Needs a Winter Nap

Winter Dormancy: Why Your Cactus Collection Needs a Winter Nap

When the nights draw in and the jumpers come out, it’s not just us humans who slow down for winter. Your cactus collection does too! 🌙

Most cacti come from hot, dry regions where temperatures drop at night and almost no rain falls during the cooler months. To cope, they enter a dormant phase, conserving energy until the warmth and light return in spring.

But here’s where things can get tricky.

Central Heating Confusion

Our cosy UK homes are full of radiators, heated floors and toasty rooms. While that’s great for us, it can really confuse your cactus collection. Central heating tricks them into thinking summer has arrived again, just when they are meant to be resting.

The result?
Your plants might start to grow weak, pale new shoots or stretch as they reach for light that just isn’t strong enough.

To help your spiky crew through the season, here’s what to do:

🌵 1. Find a Cool, Bright Spot

Move your collection away from radiators, fireplaces or heat vents. A bright windowsill in a cool room (ideally between 8 and 12°C) is perfect.
Think of it like tucking them into a sunny but chilly winter cabin.

💧 2. Ease Up on the Water

This is the big one.
During dormancy, your cactus collection barely drinks. Watering too often can lead to root rot.
Only water when the soil is completely dry, usually every 4 to 6 weeks.

Tip: when in doubt, don’t. They can survive drought far better than soggy soil.

☀️ 3. Keep the Light Coming

Even in winter, cacti still need good light, ideally several hours of bright, indirect sunshine each day.
If your home doesn’t get much daylight, a small grow light can help until spring returns.

💤 4. Let Them Rest

Dormancy is essential for your cactus collection’s long-term health. This rest period helps them store energy, reset their internal rhythm and prepare for strong new growth and sometimes even flowers in spring.

So while it might look like nothing is happening, there is plenty going on beneath the soil. 🌱

❤️ In Short: Less Fuss, More Rest

Your cactus collection doesn’t need pampering this season, just peace, a bright window and the occasional sip of water.
Let them rest while you enjoy your hot chocolate and fairy lights, and when spring arrives they’ll wake up happy, healthy and ready to grow.

Spike up your life this winter, gently! 🌵✨
